The Life of a Professional Gambler in Las Vegas
When most people think of the life of the professional gambler in Las Vegas they think of a guy who plays high stakes poker and then goes up to his suite in the hotel. In reality there are few professional gamblers who live this way, most have a much more mundane lifestyle.
The first thing that you have to keep in mind about the life of a professional gambler in Las Vegas is that in most cases it is not nearly as exciting or as glamorous as most people seem to think that it is. First of all few professional gamblers live in the hotels at the casinos, most have houses out in the suburbs. For the most part they are regular people with the same lifestyle as anybody else, they have a mortgage and a lawn to mow, they take the kids to soccer games on the weekends.
The actual job of being a professional gambler obviously involves gambling. This means that you go to the casino and you get yourself into a game of whatever you have chosen to make a living playing, usually poker. Although this may sound like a lot of fun in reality a lot of it is rather tedious as you will mainly be playing against tourists who are not particularly good at the game.
One of the biggest misconceptions about being a professional gambler is that there are huge paydays where you go home with tens of thousands of dollars in your pocket. While this can happen it is fairly uncommon. Far more likely is that you will win a number of small pots and end up with a few hundred dollars in winnings at the end of the night. This is a key point, to be a successful gambler you need to be a consistent winner not a guy who wins big from time to time. The result is that most professional gamblers don't earn nearly as much as most people seem to think that they do.
The other big thing that takes up a lot of the time of professional gamblers is improving their skills. This means that they have to read up on the game that they play to learn more about it, they also need to practice constantly. If you are going to make a living as a gambler you have to make sure that you are better than the average player, this takes quite a bit of effort. You also have to make sure that you avoid making mistakes while you are playing, the worst thing that can happen is that you can end up losing more than you win. All professional gamblers are only a few bad games away from being out of business so you have to make sure that you don't let this happen.
