War of Paper

Millions may have died over idealism and religion, but there is one issue so contentious that it splits families down the middle and turns spouses against each other. Neither side seems capable of changing their opinion and there is no compromise. It has to be one way or another.

This is our chance, people, to settle this—once and for all.

When you put toilet paper on the holder, should it hang near the wall or the toilet?

Is a little stretch not worth the ethetically enhanced, less cluttered, truly "rest"room experience?
The bathroom is often referred to as the 'restroom'. Few of us have the luxury of space to afford to make our bathroom into the restful refuge it ought to be. To achieve our bathroom's restful potential, it is imperative that we try to minimize the visual clutter that so easily infests such a high-traffic area. Even such a minor thing as placing the toilet paper so that the loose end tucks neatly along the wall, instead of flapping wantonly into the limited volume ot the room, can go far towards minimizing the visual clutter in this small, yet important room. It is the little things in life that can make the greatest differences! Is a little stretch not worth the ethetically enhanced, less cluttered, truly "rest"room experience?

When a toddler enters the bathroom and discovers that the toilet paper spins, an almost automatic is to make it spin even more. This is usually accomplished by placing the hands near the top and pulling them down. With the end of the toilet paper on the wall side, this creates a pleasing effect; with the end on the toilet side, it creates a big pile on the floor.

Each is presented to you so you don't have to fish around between wall and roll for the end.

(Why am I writing this, I do have something else to do).

it is less likely that 'poopy-hands' will leave their mark on the wall if they reach the paper long before encountering said wall
Efficiency dictates that the paper be presented so it is as close to one's hand as possible. Assuming the hand reaching for the paper is doing so from the 'toilet' side (as suggested by my personal experience), and not from 'within the wall' (as my husband's practice of letting the paper hang near the wall would appear to suggest), it would be illogical to arbitrarily increase the distance the hand has to traverse to reach the paper. Plus, it is less likely that 'poopy-hands' will leave their mark on the wall if they reach the paper long before encountering said wall. It seems likely that this position will be strongly influenced by whether or not you are the one who cleans the bathroom walls...

Consider what happens each time you reach for a piece of paper when it is against the wall - you touch the wall. Yes, the same wall that each previous visitor has touched with their hands.

I have seen in bathrrooms where the paper has been hung against the wall, the area where the paper hangs is noticeably dirtier even after cleaning. This is because people have to scratch against it to take a piece of paper.

The easiest way to find the end of the toilet paper, if it is not obvious, is to spin it slightly. This is best accomplished by placing a finger or thumb on the top and bringing it toward the body, sometimes running another finger along the edge to catch the corner.
